Although LAACC has existed since 2000, as The London Asian African Caribbean Centre, its management were concerned that the name of the organisation might appear ‘exclusive’ and that many other ethnic minorities, including European immigrants, might not approach the centre in the belief that its doors/services were not open to them. Consequently, to help make a more positive impact on the society in which it is based, The London Asian African Caribbean Centre was renamed as LAACC as a “Brand” and re-launched in February 2006, with a new and more specific objective for its future activities. New objectivesWhile evaluating its place in the community, LAACC’s management recognised that one of the greatest drawbacks experienced by newcomers to the Boroughs of Islington, Haringey and Hackney was their partial or total inability to express themselves in written or spoken English. The direct consequences of this were that many people of employable age were unable to find work, or to learn the skills that might help them gain formal employment, with the result that they were in danger of becoming victims of long term ‘unemployment’. To help overcome this problem LAACC will, now, focus on providing further education and job skills training for those of all ages and backgrounds wishing to develop their personal abilities. These new services include a wide range of courses – many certificated - not only for those who are unemployed but also for those wishing to move on in their careers. In addition to language based workshops with computerised aids, clients will have access to the Internet, one on one coaching and job seeker advice. LAACC’s management will also ensure that the new organisation plays a strategic and central role within its community through close liaison with local businesses, faith organisations and other voluntary and community organisations to help ensure that courses reflect the needs of future employers and the learners. As part of its aim to help bring a diverse community together LAACC plans to create a number of Community Awareness Seminars and Youth Projects to help and bring local residents and business people into closer contact with each other to the benefit of the area in general. General information on courses and their content appears separately on this website but if there are further courses or information which you feel would be of interest to local people please contact us at 020 7263 3182 or email – This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it Registered Charity number: 11543.Company limited by Guarantee number: 5355191.
